Built From Real Market Experience

Teaching investment analysis the way it actually works

We started Lralmontex in 2019 because too many Australians were entering markets without understanding the basics. Not the theory you find in textbooks—the practical stuff that helps you read a balance sheet or spot red flags in quarterly reports.

Our approach isn't flashy. We focus on fundamentals because that's what holds up when markets get weird. And markets always get weird eventually.

Based in Port Macquarie, we work with people across Australia who want to understand what they're investing in before they commit their money.

How We Got Here

2019

Foundation

Starting With What Was Missing

After spending years watching people make avoidable mistakes with their investment decisions, we decided to create something different. The focus was simple—teach people how to actually read financial statements and understand what companies are really doing with their money. We started with small workshops in Port Macquarie, testing content with real learners who had no background in finance.

2021

Refinement

Building The Curriculum That Works

By this point we'd worked with enough students to know what they struggled with most. So we rebuilt everything around those pain points—ratio analysis, cash flow interpretation, sector-specific considerations for Australian markets. We dropped the fluff and kept what actually helped people make informed decisions. The feedback showed us we were heading in the right direction.

2024

Expansion

Reaching More Australian Investors

We moved our primary programs online to reach people beyond the mid-north coast. The core material stayed grounded in practical application—understanding annual reports, evaluating management commentary, recognising warning signs in financial footnotes. We also added modules specifically addressing ASX-listed companies and Australian regulatory considerations that matter for local investors.

2025

Present

Continuing To Improve

This year we're focused on deepening the material around sector analysis and competitive positioning. The investment landscape keeps changing, but the fundamentals remain consistent. Our upcoming autumn 2025 program will include updated case studies from recent ASX earnings seasons and expanded coverage of how macroeconomic factors filter through to company-level results.

Who's Teaching This

Our instructors come from actual investment analysis backgrounds. They've worked through market cycles, read thousands of financial statements, and made their share of mistakes along the way—which makes them better teachers.

Desmond Threlfall, lead investment analysis instructor at Lralmontex

Desmond Threlfall

Lead Instructor & Curriculum Director

Desmond spent twelve years analysing equities for institutional investors before shifting to education. He specialised in Australian small and mid-cap companies, which gave him deep experience with financial statement analysis and competitive assessment.

What sets his teaching apart is the focus on pattern recognition—helping students spot the subtle indicators that separate strong businesses from troubled ones. He doesn't predict market movements; instead, he teaches people how to evaluate underlying business quality.

Outside of teaching, Desmond still maintains a personal investment portfolio that he uses as ongoing case study material for students. He believes the best way to teach analysis is to show the actual thought process behind investment decisions.

Our Teaching Philosophy

Focus On Primary Sources

We teach students to work directly with financial statements, annual reports, and regulatory filings. No summaries or simplified versions—the actual documents that companies publish. This builds real analytical capability rather than reliance on third-party interpretations.

Context Matters More Than Formulas

Ratios and metrics are useful, but they're meaningless without understanding the business context behind them. We spend significant time on industry dynamics, competitive positioning, and management quality—the qualitative factors that numbers alone can't capture.

Learn From Actual Examples

Every concept gets illustrated with real companies and actual financial situations. We analyse recent ASX earnings reports, discuss what worked and what didn't, and examine how different analysts approached the same information. The case studies are current and relevant to Australian markets.

Build Progressive Understanding

Investment analysis isn't something you master in a weekend. We structure content so each module builds on previous knowledge, gradually increasing complexity as students develop their analytical foundation. The goal is lasting comprehension, not quick certifications.
